For those who may not know, here at the BedStuyDandy I document contemporary references or the use of Jean Michel Basquiat’s work, as both research for my thesis paper and personal satisfaction. Yesterday gave rap, another Jean Michel Basquiat nod. This time around the medium is magazine print, and the nod also pays respect to Andy Warhol. For this month’s issue of Complex Magazine, both Jeremy Scott and Harlem MC ASAP Rocky are on the cover, in a frame and pose that may seem familiar. The cover has the fashion innovator and the swag artist…

in full on boxing stance, reminiscent of Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat’s 1985 poster promoting their collaborative work; a project that has been under critical critique since its debut. The poster features similar typography, and the star design that the initial poster included in it’s first issue (the poster soon became a commodity for re-print).

I love the concept, but felt the cover should have been changed a little to infuse Jeremy Scott’s brilliance and Rocky’s growing popularity. I know both of these aspects can be easily included in the article, but what makes it so much more interesting is the integration into the cover. Assisting the cover is a video which goes behind the scenes of the shoot, and conversation between the two artists. The conversation is solely based on fashion and how the two feel when getting dressed, nothing mentally demanding. What is evident in the video, is the respect the two artists have for their craft and each other’s work. Ironically the same cover/video was shot for Basquiat and Warhol’s collaborative project. History damn sure repeats itself.

Below you can find the comparative videos…

Alright I am done with the connections, it was just too trippy not to document…

Well wishes.
